Apple UI design claims

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

In the recent Mac celebration of innovation, that normal geeks think of as a release announcement, Jobs claimed about touch screen UI:”We’ve done tons of user testing on this, and it turns out it doesn’t work,” adding that “touch surfaces want to be horizontal.”

Now I find that astounding! First of all I have at many occasions used my Android phone while being vertical! Actually daily, if not 90% of the time I use it!

I’ve also used my tablet PC – sorry iPad isn’t that innovative in my mind as I have had tablets for 5 years now – in vertical positions, heck even in reverse horizontal positions (as in in bed upside down!)

I have even found myself sat in front of my linux box pointing at windows to move them – yes, it didn’t work – but it showed to me that using the fingers on my vertical screens would actually not fell that foreign, actually it would feel quite natural.

Am I really that different from other people?! Am I that geeky, that I can use my super geeky powers in such innovative ways that I can put my greasy fingers on a vertical screen and expect it to move stuff? Apparently! Or has this position by Jobs something to do with Microsoft’s patents pre-dating Apple’s patents on this, trying to avoid patent wars? I think the latter, and I would have liked Jobs to be upfront about it. I’d actually have praised him for it!!

I’ve finalised the WP export feature, you’ll be able to find it in the menu above your personal blog.

This video will show in detail how to use it.

WP export/import Arrgghhh!!

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

Working on this feature even more this morning.

I’ve managed to get tags to import, but they aren’t assigned to the posts. This is weird as the xml is the same as the original export files from WP, so I thought some test would be appropriate.

If I export a original WXR to an empty WP blog, it seemingly works. The tags are assigned as they shoud, so I’ll have to do more work on my export files. I suspect at this moment that WP break XML rules, we’ll see.

However the reason for this blog is that categories are imported strangely! In my export file I have a category called “test cat” with a slug/nicename test_cat. This gets imported but not used, however a category, which isn’t declared anywhere in the WXR with slug test-cat is created and assigned to the blog appropriately! This is bizarre behaviour.

I see a bug report coming up to WP…

Blog export WordPress

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

I’ve just created a WordPress WXR export option on RedGloo.

This should allow you to export your blog to a WordPress server. I’ve tested it with my own, and it seems to work fine, except for links to files on RedGloo, which still are pointing to the RedGloo resource. This isn’t strange as this is normal behaviour for WordPress exports, however IMHO an exporter really ought to export this – with links in blogposts changed to the new server.

We’ll see if I make it…

Export blogs

posted by Karsten

in elggcontent, RedGloo

I’ve been investigating solutions for exporting blogs from Redgloo to elsewhere.
I’ve already added the functionlity to export your own blog posts as rss in one single rss file. This however doesn’t export comments, nor is it possible to export any access restricted material.
It seems feasible, by using rss2.php under mod/blog, to create an export facility which creates an extended WordPress rss feed to allow easy export to WordPress. This would allow export of comments and potentially tags as categories.
Some discussion would also be needed regarding access restricted material.

Just three problems.

  • Firstly the link although very well hidden, but nonetheless, was pointing at a url in a ".net" ending domain.
  • Secondly our IT department normally calls itself ITS
  • Thirdly the spam filter is, if anything, way TOO good – absolutely no need for any updates there – as this was my first spam in my spam box for a week, and I have the filter set on the absolute lowest level of filtering. It has even retained important mails for me in the past…

Where to post?!

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

So now it is my turn to have that question…

I’m not, as you’ll notice from my RedGloo postings, the most productive blogger in the world. And I’ve tried to keep my blogs to a limited number of places, where it has been making sense where a certain blog should go. For instance MUVE related stuff has gone to either LLL3D or MUVEnation, other work related stuff has gone to here, and private stuff, well at the moment facebook, but for a time it went to my private webdomain, which ended looking like I didn’t have a life, so I removed the blog, and has kept it as a static webpage.

But now I have the problem, where I feel like I should have one single repository of blogs, which then are distributed to the different blogging platforms on demand with a shared pool of comments. Linksphere has been introduced! It’s a social network intended for researchers at UoR, which has been set up by my friend and colleague Pat, who is reminding me what a good idea it is to blog there – yet the same post could easily have been posted here…

This is all good, but now I have this blogging sense of multiple personalities, which I somehow have to sort out in my head… 😉

Christmas Party – Soup preparation

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

You might have noticed – It is (almost) Christmas! Therefore the time is nigh for the annual Odinlab Scandinavian Themed Christmas Party – Yay!

The actual party is tomorrow, but today I’m starting the preparations. I”m going to make a traditional Danish “Klar Hønsekøds Suppe”. This is a long process (takes 5-6 hours) with additional preparation of “Tartelletter” (actually the main reason for making the soup) and other bi-products of the soup. I’m a bit scared of this, as I rarely make this soup, and I would utterly hate it, if all this effort was wasted.

Wish me luck – I’m always more confident in front of the keyboard than the kitchen utilities 8)
