Eclipse setup

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

I've been looking at how to use eclipse with the setup that Rob has made now.

If "the developer" is only going to change Java code, then it can be downloaded as before from inside Eclipse. This is discouraged as we should be versatile 😉 so:

"The developer" should check out all the files on the google code site using something like tortoisse. Next step is to open up Eclipse in a "random" empty workspace, and then create a new project, selecting the using the "create from existing source" option browse to the folder of the java code.

Week04Feb

Rob, P@ and I have looked at how to get further in the Mea work, as a result I’ll be looking at integrating user technologies into MeA.

We decided to use Mono in the future whereever possible when coding MeA. Therefore I needed to set up working environments.

I’ve managed to get a working plug-in of mono for VS2005.

I’m still struggling with getting linux and mono into play. I believe that my biggest problems arise from VB in mono, and I think that I’ll soon disregard the language on the Linux platform.

Additionally I’ve started to install Visual studio tools for Office to enable integration of especially emails and calendars in office, but it has proven difficult to get running fully – still work in progress…

I’ve also worked on MUVEnation tag handbook, to get it into a WIKI in Moodle, looked into proxy issues (yes, they are still using basic auth!!!), partaken in training, sent the CEN-ISSS CV and tried to get the Mea server to start using RDFS inferencing. The last part is bringing up strange internal jena  invocation exception, which ‘m trying to resolve.

Hmmmnn, this week has brought more new problems than resolved issues.

Mono in VS2005 – Celebrations

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

Mono in VS2003 is a piece of cake, because there is an installer, and a community of users who have shaved all the problems away.

Sadly Mono in VS2005  is not that simple, and has given me considerable aggrevation, but I've now finally got a running add-in in VS2005. Following is an bullet point list of what I did to achieve this milestone:

  1. Have mono installed, thanks P@ 😉
  2. Download vsAddin2005 from http://anonsvn.mono-project.com/viewcvs/trunk/wintools/vsAddIn2005/ (Rob found this library)
  3. Open the solution in VS2005
  4. Open monoaddin.Addin and change the path in <Assembly> to the path you are using
  5. Build everything
  6. Copy all files from BinAndLib to the folder where your assembly is. (The code checks if they arein that folder. This surely most be a bug, because it would be enough to have them in the path.)
  7. You need all files from the folders BinAndLib and reflib somewhere in your path, e.g. system32. (Could also add the folders to the path)
  8. Start VS2005
  9. Go to Tools->option, under environment->Add-in/Macros security add the folder which has monoaddin.Addin
  10. Go to Tools->Addin manager…
  11. tick all the options of the monoaddin
  12. Open a solution and you can celebrate :o)

Brazil Banning Games!!

posted by Karsten

Brazil bans counterstrike because a mod of cs teachers war strategies in Rio and everquest because it allows people to play on the evil side of fantasy!

I'm outraged! How can a so called democratic country do this? The next thing would probably be banning FIFA06 because Brazil didn't win that tournament, although the game allows you to "undo" history!

Never change a running system

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

I've learned my lesson yet again! Never change a running system, expecially when somebody has to use the next working day…

I've been developing an API over the last year, and it is getting pretty big. The developers that use the API are some people from BitMedia in Graz in a webserver environment and myself for a desktop application.

We've been running a server for a couple of weeks without problems. Beginning of the week I found some minor bugs, because of some work on my desktop application, and I immidiately corrected them and sent the updates to the server guys (running from a server in Texas).

Suddenly the server stopped "thinking" correctly, and couldn't do the comparisons that it ought to do. There is (to my knowledge) no reason for this, I haven't changed anything in the comparison classes that change things so dramatically, unless the Graz guys take advantage of some obscure behaviour in my API that I don't know about myself. Furthermore my version of the software worked just out of the box…

At some point today I thought we'd lost all the work people had done the last couple of weeks, but luckily a complete roll-back of the code base managed to bring back the data, and right now I don't care about the small bug that I know is in the system… Afterall my desktop version is able to work without the bug 😉

Now I'm just ready for a nice relaxing week-end with my brother and his family visiting from Denmark…

Traffic, and a nice conspiracy theory!

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

Ok, so my road into Uni was really awful today! I started out approx 8:20 and was stopped in a queue less than 400m from my house. There I was sat for 5 minutes moving only 10 meters, so I decided to turn around and work a bit from home.

At 10:00 I decided to take the chance and go to work. Everything went well, except when I reached Uni there were absolutely no parking spaces! I used just as much time finding one reasonably legal space as I did driving here.

This brings me to the KEY thing in this blog. There were nobody attending the entry gate into campus, on the other hand they were out checking cars (hence the need for a legal spot).

So do they leave the gate to allow people in, so that they can catch more people increasing the profits? It would in a strange way make sense….

Subversion and the proxy

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

If you are going to use Subversion inside the “Great Firewall of University of Reading” (GeaFUoR) then you need to do the following:

Go to the “servers” file of subversion which is located in

your_machines_Documents_and_Settings_folderyour_usernameApplication DataSubversion

find the proxy settings and change them to something like (remember to remove the ‘#’ infront of them):

[global]
# http-proxy-exceptions = *.exception.com, www.internal-site.org
http-proxy-host = wwwcache.rdg.ac.uk
http-proxy-port = 8080
http-proxy-username = uniUserName
http-proxy-password = yourPassword
# http-compression = no
# No http-timeout, so just use the builtin default.
# No neon-debug-mask, so neon debugging is disabled.
# ssl-authority-files = /path/to/CAcert.pem;/path/to/CAcert2.pe

And subversion will work. Unfortunately if you are using several computers, you’ll have to do this on all of them! I’ve now had to do this twice, and was incouraged to do write it down. This is now done… (A bit overdue, I know P@!!)

MS and that stupid “Search Desktop” thingy – 2

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

And I removed it, but now 5 minutes later it decided to re-install it, because I really really need it!!!!!! So this is a recursive install! This is just so stupid… (Dare I say typical MS user-friendliness, without starting a war.)

MS and that stupid “Search Desktop” thingy

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

I just ran the newest update of XP, and lo'n'behold they decided that I wanted a search desktop bar on my taskbar.

I DO NOT WANT THAT!!!

So now I know I've got to find a way to remove it, and knowing MS from the past it is probably hidden somewhere counter-intuitive place deep inside some other nasty place…

Does anybody know where?
