Programming Personality Test

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

I hate personality tests. They usually degrade the individual to a mere number, and are often very easy to cheat in!!!

So why do I write about this personality test? I don't know, perhaps because it is the first time I've seen a programming personality test, and just for that is a fun thing to do!

Here is my Programming Personality made without cheating too much :o)

Your programmer personality type is:

   DLTC

You're a Doer.

You are very quick at getting tasks done. You believe the outcome is the most important part of a task and the faster you can reach that outcome the better. After all, time is money.

You like coding at a Low level.

You're from the old school of programming and believe that you should have an intimate relationship with the computer. You don't mind juggling registers around and spending hours getting a 5% performance increase in an algorithm.

You work best in a Team.

A good group is better than the sum of it's parts. The only thing better than a genius programmer is a cohesive group of genius programmers.

You are a Conservative programmer.

The less code you write, the less chance there is of it containing a bug. You write short and to the point code that gets the job done efficiently.

Now the web is about ‘me’

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

This article starts out by claiming that searching on the Internet is dead!

This obviously isn't claimed by goggle but yahoo. What they say is that the next "new" web will be a personalised web, where the user gets and uses interesting information according to who they are and what they are interested in. As they state: "now the web is about 'me.'"

So, as we are working in the personal learning environment area with the MeAggregator, are we creating a "true" Web 3.0 application? Are Web 3.0 the Personal Web rather than the ordinary assumption that it is the Semantic Web, or is the Semantic tools just the driver (or back bone) to making the Personal Web truly personal, including semantics and pragmatics, and not just another widget style web application like NetVibes?

Who is sick

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

Whether you need a good excuse to be sick, or you just are hypocondriac (misspelled?), this site http://whoissick.org/sickness/ is a quite interesting piece of web 2.0. It enables people to register their sickness, and allow others, by using google maps, to see who is sick in their area.

The closest illness right now to the Uni is somebody down by London Road with head ache, cough and a runny nose!

MeAggregator – Use cases

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

Use case 1:

Mr X is a student at UoR in his final year. He is job hunting, but has found it difficult, because he hasn't received any grades yet, nor has he finished his exams yet. Luckily he his been able to gather all of his coursework and validated exam results from previous years using the MeAggregator, which has enabled him to create a "view" of his work on a website, which he shows different companies. The MeAggregator has also allowed him to create a pdf file of the material, which he has showed of at various graduate fairs.

Use case 2:

Miss Y is a keen programmer that would like to be involved in a open source games project. Unfortunately she doesn't know anybody who shares the same passion (strange  she is a CS student, hmnn!) Through the tags and trust network of the MeAggregator she has been able to find two other students at Kings who wants to create a network based game for girls. Because the trust levels of the students are high she has decided to contact them to see if she can be part of the project.

Danish Pastry

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

A couple of years ago I made a life changing choice. Never to eat ANY danish pastry unless being in a country which is contained in the name of that particular cake. The reason for this seemingly irrational decision was the total lack of quality of "foreign" danish pastry. I've tried eating them in countries like Norway, Sweden, Germany, USA and the UK, but I've always come to the conclusion that it simply is a dishonesty to eat them while knowing how they really should taste!

Today I did it – I broke down and bought myself a danish from Dolcevita, with the anticipation that this is a slight up market coffee place (especially considering the location at Reading Uni) and that the pastry actually looked surprisingly tasty.

I did eat the cake completely, but after a very short time of reflection I've decided to go back to my old ways. Danish pastry is not worth buying outside of the old kingdom, so I'll have to find other means of pudding satisfaction. I probably should try more of the good old UK puddings and cakes…

Car robbery v. 2.0

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

And so it happened again!! Some twat broke the passenger side front window of our car, this time while it was parked in Bracknell. The only thing they took was the TomTom window holder. I can buy a new one for £22 at amazon, so I'll do that because if I made a robbery claim I'd have a "self" part of £200, whereas with only a glass repair it would be £60.

Everything is ready for the repairer to come tomorrow and fix the glass.

This time these questions arise

  • Did anybody watch the CCTV that "look" directly at our car?
    • YES
      • Why didn't they do anything about it?
      • Why did the car have time to break into two cars without anybody doing anything?
    • NO
      • Why is it there at all?
  • Is my theory true? CCTV doesn't prevent crime, it actually aims it, because the criminal knows that there won't be any security people close by to catch them! It is a safe area to commit crime in as long as you disguise yourself…

Holidaying

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

I've been travelling Belgium and Holland (and a little bit of France) over Easter and it was a great trip. Kirsten and I really felt like getting away a bit, and so we did. The whether was fantastic, and the holtels I had found were really nice. I can highly recommend Brugge (or Bruges in France) which is a lovely old city which seems to have all the things that makes life nice πŸ˜‰ I really got my eyes opened to Belgium which previously has been a place of work or a "travel through" country…

Holland is always nice, and I especially enjoyed the traditional pancakes and the sweets, which are very similar to the Danish ones :o)

Car robbery!!

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

When my wife got to the car this morning, somebody had smashed in the passenger side window. So now I'm busily arranging police, insurance, glass, cleaning the car etc…

2 questions arises from this:

  • Why didn't they smash in the window of the Porsche which was parked next to it? (mine is a Kia)
  • Why didn't they take anything??

Yet another crazy patent

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

So now we can't use linked lists anymore in our programming!! According to this http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/7028023.html linked lists using pointers was patented in 2006 by an "inventor".

Isn't it just annoying! I thought they were common knowledge of programmers, so I just used them since the mid-80s. I should have patented them then and would now be living the good life supported by the royalties…
