Is 4GB the sweetspot for Vista?

posted by Karsten

According to this article http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBa you really need 4GB Ram to run Vista. MS claim 512MB should be sufficient, but it probably would only give you the juice to load up Vista with no power to run any applications.

My problem here is that with my recent computer purchase I managed to get a 2GB system together of which I'm pretty proud (£500+ without monitor), and it provides me with amazing / enough performance on my XP system. But is it really already too old!!

It just emphasise the need for supported lower spec operating systems. How long is MS going to maintain XP? Good thing I have a Linux box as well, so I'll be able to manage 😉

Yehaaaa – I've just bought an XBox….

Well, to be correct I've bought a new mobile, the old one is falling to pieces, and one of the buttons only work once in a while… But as a "freebee" I will receive an XBox, this is the exact same way I got my PSP 😀 Can't wait, I should have it in a months time…

Finally some good news from US legislation.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/social/?p=55 explains that the DOPA (Deleting Online Predetors Act) which was rushed through the house of representatives has not become legislation, because it was never approved by the senate, and now as the democrats are in charge of both houses has to be re-negotiated. It is very unlikely that they will ban web2.0 features in any new acts.

So US schools can use web2.0 technology without breaking any stupid rules, so there is hope for eLearning 2.0 afterall…

Illness…

Hmn, after a 5 days in bed I'm happily back in good health! I feel like I've been too sick the last year (I had 4 days in the autumn, and a couple of days the autumn 2005.) which I'm not used to! This time I contaminated Kirsten (my wife) as well, so she is in bed as I write…

I hope it hasn't anything to do with the Uni heating system, which is a strange entity that makes the temperatur go up and down randomly in my office. I know that the Uni has been looking at it for ages without any results as far as I know, so if it is the cause then I'm pretty much stuck with it 🙁

And contrary to my previous XP installation problems, the process went as easy as it could! I guess having standard hardware under the bonnet is an advantage 😉

Vista exploit

This is one of the funniest exploits I've heard of http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/security/vista_please_dont_list

So with the new voice command feature in Vista it is possible to "take" over just by having access to the speakers… Skype is truely a killer-app for the crackers!

Snow

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

So today we had the first snow…

As you might now I'm Scandinavian! I grew up in Denmark, and I've lived in Norway, so I'm pretty much used to snow (and lots of it mind you.)

BUT everytime it snow in England I get scared. (You) Brits (on average) do not have a clue about how to behave in traffic when it has snowed… Here are some examples:

  • People drive WAY too slowly causing others to do studpid overtakings.
  • People drive WAY too fast, thinking that they are snow overlords. Remember that the tires aren't made for snow in the UK…
  • NO, it doesn't help to apply extra power when you wheels are spinning, you've got to do the opposit.
  • Break lengths should be at least 3 times longer, so why are people still examining my break lights so closely!
  • Please do not break when cornering, do it before a corner!!
  • As a rule of thumb,  use a lower gear than usual, or you might end up sliding when cornering.

I've decided today to come in after the rush hour, cuz I simple do not dare to risk my life…
