Illness…

posted by Karsten

Hmn, after a 5 days in bed I'm happily back in good health! I feel like I've been too sick the last year (I had 4 days in the autumn, and a couple of days the autumn 2005.) which I'm not used to! This time I contaminated Kirsten (my wife) as well, so she is in bed as I write…

I hope it hasn't anything to do with the Uni heating system, which is a strange entity that makes the temperatur go up and down randomly in my office. I know that the Uni has been looking at it for ages without any results as far as I know, so if it is the cause then I'm pretty much stuck with it šŸ™

Vista exploit

posted by Karsten

This is one of the funniest exploits I've heard of http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/security/vista_please_dont_list

So with the new voice command feature in Vista it is possible to "take" over just by having access to the speakers… Skype is truely a killer-app for the crackers!

Snow

posted by Karsten

So today we had the first snow…

As you might now I'm Scandinavian! I grew up in Denmark, and I've lived in Norway, so I'm pretty much used to snow (and lots of it mind you.)

BUT everytime it snow in England I get scared. (You) Brits (on average) do not have a clue about how to behave in traffic when it has snowed… Here are some examples:

  • People drive WAY too slowly causing others to do studpid overtakings.
  • People drive WAY too fast, thinking that they are snow overlords. Remember that the tires aren't made for snow in the UK…
  • NO, it doesn't help to apply extra power when you wheels are spinning, you've got to do the opposit.
  • Break lengths should be at least 3 times longer, so why are people still examining my break lights so closely!
  • Please do not break when cornering, do it before a corner!!
  • As a rule of thumb,  use a lower gear than usual, or you might end up sliding when cornering.

I've decided today to come in after the rush hour, cuz I simple do not dare to risk my life…

US law and online gambling

posted by Karsten

The US has long been fighting a war againstonline gambling, which has led to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which take effect from July 2007, hence enabling prosecution of gambling sites operating in the states (including overseas companies).

But just to emphasise how keen the US is on this issue, this article http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/17/neteller_founders_arrested/ reports that 2 former neteller executives have just been arrested. Neteller is an online payment service and they are arrested not under the UIGE act, but because they have been accommodating payments to online gambing services (amongst many other legal services).

Netelle haven't done anything else than being a banking service!! And the individuals arrested aren't working for them anymore! So who'll be next in line? The hosting company of a poker site in 1998? The backbone provider that streamed a package from Gibratar to Arkansas in 2003?

Revision of my browser usage!

posted by Karsten

I usually use firefox in my daily Internet usage, but if I'm banking or buying stuff I usually use IE because I in the past have experienced problems with limited support of firefox behind https secured connections by certain companies.

But according to this article IE had public critical vulnarabilities without fix patches for more than 9 months of 2006 whereas firefox only had 9 days.

The reason for this might / could be that approx 80% of internet usage are done using IE, and as such makes it more profitable for cypercrooks to create the vulnarabilities, but I don't care about the reasons!!! From now on I'm just using firefox and if it doesn't work I'll use IE…

6 – 0

YEEEEESSSSS – I was there!!!

My first match of the season and I was lucky. An excellent match where the Royals simply outplayed the Hammers. Granted the Hammers played badly, but the Royals simply played very well. I was especially impressed by Hunt and Little who completely outplayed their immidiate opponents on the wings and Sidwell who was a work horse on the midfield. But every player had to take credit for this magnificient game.

The best thing about the match was that my wife had bought the tickets as an anniversory gift (11 years) and were at the Mad Stat for the first time herself, and now she would like to go again…
