US law and online gambling

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

The US has long been fighting a war againstonline gambling, which has led to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which take effect from July 2007, hence enabling prosecution of gambling sites operating in the states (including overseas companies).

But just to emphasise how keen the US is on this issue, this article http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/17/neteller_founders_arrested/ reports that 2 former neteller executives have just been arrested. Neteller is an online payment service and they are arrested not under the UIGE act, but because they have been accommodating payments to online gambing services (amongst many other legal services).

Netelle haven't done anything else than being a banking service!! And the individuals arrested aren't working for them anymore! So who'll be next in line? The hosting company of a poker site in 1998? The backbone provider that streamed a package from Gibratar to Arkansas in 2003?

Revision of my browser usage!

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

I usually use firefox in my daily Internet usage, but if I'm banking or buying stuff I usually use IE because I in the past have experienced problems with limited support of firefox behind https secured connections by certain companies.

But according to this article IE had public critical vulnarabilities without fix patches for more than 9 months of 2006 whereas firefox only had 9 days.

The reason for this might / could be that approx 80% of internet usage are done using IE, and as such makes it more profitable for cypercrooks to create the vulnarabilities, but I don't care about the reasons!!! From now on I'm just using firefox and if it doesn't work I'll use IE…

6 – 0

YEEEEESSSSS – I was there!!!

My first match of the season and I was lucky. An excellent match where the Royals simply outplayed the Hammers. Granted the Hammers played badly, but the Royals simply played very well. I was especially impressed by Hunt and Little who completely outplayed their immidiate opponents on the wings and Sidwell who was a work horse on the midfield. But every player had to take credit for this magnificient game.

The best thing about the match was that my wife had bought the tickets as an anniversory gift (11 years) and were at the Mad Stat for the first time herself, and now she would like to go again…

XNA and my rotten computer

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

I really do need a new computer…

I installed XNA on my home computer today and it wouldn't run out of the box. Reason, my graphics card is too old, it doesn't support "Pixel shader 1.1". I did find a work around here, but it makes everything INCREDIBLY slow as it runs in software!

So I guess I've got to wait till January where we'll by a new computer…

Christmas tree icon

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

In recognition of the season I've changed my icon to one of the christmas trees in tivoli gardens Copenhagen, which is the amusement park in down town Cph that inspired Walt Disney to make his Disney worlds. As with most things he did he forgot to replicate the spirit of it, but rather understood how to make money on the idea 😉

It is a very romantic place especially this time of the year…

Christmas food and traditions

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

Christmas time is upon us, and this is really the only time where I get a bit homesick. Not in the sense that I want to go home, no, then I'd probably just leave for home on Friday. My problem is the christmas food! Granted a turkey is nice, and I'd probably get that in Denmark as well, but what about the "brown'ed" potatoes, the special pickled "asier" and the red cabbage dish that follow it.  Also afterwards the rise pudding ("ris a la mande") with the almond competition is missing. The dish has an almond in it and the person who gets it wins a present, funny enough somehow it is usually one of the kids that wins. After that we have marzipan sweets and speciality cakes, of which I luckily can get some in Ikea. But the night snack, pickled herring, is impossible to find.

I also find it strange why people have a christmas trees here!! Why!! Is it only there to be looked at? They don't even dance around it like we would do in Denmark. Oh, and christmas is on the 24th of December in the evening as well!

Hmn, I better stop now, or else I'll get too hungry and homesick for my own good…

Retro reflection

posted by Karsten

in RedGloo

In found the programming course in 2002 really easy, most of all because we were taught Delphi, and that's a language I've been programming in for years. To ensure that I learned something throughout the term I tried to set myself extra tasks and computer programming puzzles which I found in a book I bought called "Delphi for Experts". This helped me learning new advanced aspects of the delphi language and libraries which were a great help in the more advanced practicals in the class. I especially liked the practical were we had to create a SameGame game, mostly because it was a very open assignment, that allowed me to stretch programatically.

I did not find anything in the course particularly difficult. The most difficult was actually to get the assignment signed, as the labs were overcrowded! I hope the the change in lab arrangement will ease that. (It did 😉

Over christmas it is (was in 2002) my plan to start re-learning C++, as I've seen that we'll use that language next year. I programmed a bit in C++ a couple of years ago, but have really forgotten it. I think I'll make a game. (Didn't do it I enjoyed my christmas in Denmark instead! Did it in the summer break instead)

Annoying backslash problem

posted by Karsten

in elggcontent, RedGloo

Yet again a backslash annoyance has been detected.

If somebody puts a non URL character in their name (Such as "'") then it will be backslashed under the profile owner section in the sidebar. This happens always, except when pressing the profile link where everything is ok!!!!!!

I've looked at this, and can't find the bug easily, I checked the newest elgg code, and it seems like they have found the bug already and rectified it.

I think this is yet another incentive to upgrade the code base…
